on your Term 2 Novel List for each student’s appropriate grade.

This competition is open to Years 2 to 5 students who enrolled in the 2026 Term 2 WEMT/WEMG course at Pre-Uni New College.

All book reviews must be based on the novel chosen from the 2026 Term 2 Novel List, corresponding to each student’s grade.

Students must submit their comprehensive book reviews via the ‘Book Review Competition’ menu on Cyberschool by Saturday, 25th July 2026.

Students are encouraged to write independently and showcase their own ideas, reflections, and writing style. Marks will be awarded solely to well-presented and completed reviews, adhering to the book review guidelines provided below:

❖ Year 2 Book Review Guidelines – Dot and the Kangaroo

  • Book Summary:
    – Introduce Dot, a young girl who gets lost in the Australian bush.
    – Describe how she meets a friendly kangaroo who gives her magical berries that help her understand animal language.
    – Explain Dot’s adventures as she learns from different animals and discovers the beauty and challenges of the natural world.
    – Conclude with how Dot finds her way home and what she learns from her journey.
  • Personal Opinion:
    – Share your thoughts on Dot’s friendship with the kangaroo, what did you like most about it?
    – Discuss your favourite animal in the story and why.
    – What did you learn about nature and the Australian bush from the book?
    – How did the story make you feel—excited, curious, or inspired?
    – Would you enjoy an adventure like Dot’s? Why or why not?

 

❖ Year 3 Book Review Guidelines – The Story of Doctor Dolittle

  • Book Summary:
    – Introduce the story’s main character, Doctor Dolittle, a kindhearted physician who learns to talk to animals.
    – Describe his adventures as he sets off on a journey to Africa to help sick monkeys.
    – Mention key supporting characters, such as Polynesia the parrot and Chee-Chee the monkey, and how they help Doctor Dolittle.
    – Conclude with how Doctor Dolittle solves problems and earns the respect of animals and humans alike.
  • Personal Opinion:
    – Share what you liked about Doctor Dolittle’s ability to talk to animals.
    – Discuss your favourite animal character and why.
    – Explain how the story made you feel—was it exciting, funny, or heartwarming?
    – Would you want to have Doctor Dolittle’s skills? Why or why not?

❖ Year 4 Book Review Guidelines – The Wonderful Wizard of OZ

  • Book Summary:
    – Introduce Dorothy, the main character, and how she gets transported to the magical land of Oz.
    – Describe the friends she meets along the way: the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion.
    – Explain their journey to meet the Wizard and what they each want from him.
    – Discuss the obstacles they face and how Dorothy eventually learns an important lesson about home and self-reliance.
  • Personal Opinion:
    – Talk about your favourite character and why.
    – What was the most exciting or surprising part of the story for you?
    – Discuss the theme of bravery and friendship, how did the characters help each other?
    – If you could visit the land of Oz, what would you want to see or do?

 

❖ Year 5 Book Review Guidelines – The Adventure of Tom Sawyer

  • Book Summary:
    – Introduce Tom Sawyer, a mischievous and adventurous boy, and his life in a small town on the Mississippi River.
    – Describe some of his memorable adventures, like tricking his friends into painting the fence and running away with Huckleberry Finn.
    – Explain the mystery element of the story, including how Tom and Huck discover secrets in the graveyard.
    – Conclude with how Tom grows and learns from his experiences.
  • Personal Opinion:
    – Discuss whether you found Tom’s adventures fun or troublesome.
    – Who was your favourite character, and why?
    – Explain how the story shows friendship, courage, or cleverness.
    – Would you enjoy living in Tom’s world? Why or why not?

Participants are required to ensure the coherency of sentences, accurate spelling, proper use of grammar and punctuation, as well as the appropriate organisation of paragraphs in their reviews.

All entries must be entirely the student’s own original work. AI‑generated text or reviews are strictly prohibited. Submissions will be screened using AI‑detection tools, and any entry identified as AI‑generated will be deemed invalid and removed from the competition.

The tuition credit awarded as the prize for this competition can be used for enrolling in either holiday or regular term courses at the Pre-Uni New College branch where it was issued. This credit is non-transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash. Any remaining credit will expire 90 days from the issuance. The terms and conditions governing the use of this reward credit may be subject to change at any time without prior notice.
