The Opportunity Class (OC) Placement Test Reading Test breakdown is designed to assess more than basic reading skills.
It evaluates a student’s comprehension, reasoning, and ability to interpret language in different contexts.
The Reading Test is made up of five distinct parts, each focusing on a different reading skill.

Important note: Students cannot use a dictionary during the Reading Test.
This means understanding words in context is essential.

Below is a clear breakdown of each part of the Reading Test.

PART 1: Youth Fiction Comprehension

6 multiple-choice questions

OC Reading Test breakdown 5 sections

Students read a piece of youth fiction and answer six multiple-choice questions.

This section may focus on:

● Stylistic features (how language choices, sentence structure, imagery, and metaphors create meaning)
● Understanding the meaning of words in context
● Implied meaning (ideas suggested but not directly stated)
● The effect of language features and specific word choices
● Opinions, attitudes, and feelings of characters
● Use of examples and comparisons
● The writer’s purpose
● Text organisation and structure
● Identifying and understanding different viewpoints

Key skill: Students must think beyond the story and analyse how and why the text is written in a certain way.

PART 2: Gap Fill (Cloze) Task

8 questions

OC Reading Test breakdown

Students are given a short reading text, usually non-fiction, with eight missing words or phrases.
For each gap, they choose the most appropriate option from four choices.

Focus:

● Understanding the overall meaning of the text
● Recognising how vocabulary fits within context
● Following the logical flow of ideas

This section tests contextual vocabulary knowledge, not memorisation.

PART 3: Poetry Comprehension

5 multiple-choice questions

Questions may focus on:

● The effect of stylistic features such as imagery and metaphor
● Implied meaning within the poem
● The structure and organisation of the poem
● The writer’s purpose and message

Key skill: Interpreting meaning and emotion, rather than simply understanding literal language.

PART 4: Sentence Matching (Gap Match)

6 gaps, 7 sentences provided

OC Reading Test breakdown

Students read a short factual text with six sentences removed.
They are given seven sentences and must choose the best sentence for each gap.
One sentence will not be used.

Focus:

● Understanding text structure and cohesion
● Logical sequencing of ideas
● Recognising links between sentences and paragraphs

PART 5: Multiple Texts on a Common Theme

8 questions based on four short extracts

OC Reading Test structure

Students read four short extracts related to the same theme but written for different purposes and audiences.

Texts may include:

● Blogs
● Articles
● Reviews
● Reports
● Personal accounts

They then answer eight questions that require them to locate and compare information across the texts.

Questions may focus on:

● Implied meaning
● Attitude and opinion
● Purpose
● Style and register

Key skill: Reading efficiently to identify relevant information quickly.

💬 Final Thoughts for Parents

The OC Reading Test breakdown is not about speed reading or memorising vocabulary.
It assesses a student’s ability to:

  • Analyse language
  • Make inferences
  • Understand structure and purpose
  • Apply critical thinking under exam conditions

Targeted preparation and familiarity with question types can make a significant difference.
