Robin Hood Book Review

Many people mention the story of Robin Hood as part of English folklore or the Action/Adventure genre. Howard Pyle wrote this novel during the 15th century. Novels he wrote were Men of Iron and The Wonder Clock. Howard’s last book was The Story of the Grail and the Passing of Arthur. This one was the last book in the four-volume King Arthur Series. Today, Howard’s legacy lives on!
Book Summary
Robin Hood is the son of Master Hugh Fitzooth, King’s Ranger and Dame Fitzooth. Master Fitzooth encourages Robin to keep practising. When Robin is 18, he accidentally kills some strangers due to a wounded pride and a taunting argument. His life begins as an outlaw. He gathers a band of outlaws known as the Merry Men to fight the injustice of the wealthy.
He forms his band by gathering others who had been falsely rejected or hunting the King’s deer illegally. Robin first meets Will Stutely and becomes his page. Other outlaws are Will O’ Green, who saves Robin’s life from Simeon Carfax, and who later grants Robin the Freedom of the Forest before he dies in Chapter 15.
The main villain is the Sheriff of Nottingham, a cruel and tyrannical man who is prejudiced against the poor. He sets up traps, such as the archery contest. Due to Robin’s cunningness, the outlaw is never caught. The Sheriff has a daughter, Maid Marian. She is kind-hearted and saves Robin from an arrow in Chapter 11. Maid Marian joins the Merry Men. She marries Robin in the Epilogue- Robin shoots his final arrow.
Robin’s bravery and cleverness help him defeat injustice by using strategies such as disguising himself and defying tyranny. Examples of Robin’s daring rescues were when the Merry Men learned that the Sheriff had taken a group of prisoners, which involved disguising themselves as Friars. Robin successfully rescued the prisoners and brought them back to Sherwood Forest. His disguises are so powerful that the Sheriff and the King can’t see where Robin is.
Personal Opinion
“Rise and rise again until lambs become lions”
Robin Hood, the GOOAT (Greatest Outlaw of All Time), is an exceptional and skilled outlaw who goes on a quest to steal from the rich and give to the poor. He faced many barriers, but eventually conquered them. In the epilogue, Robin shoots his last arrow, which symbolises the end of his life. Alan a Dale sang a ballad to conclude the story.
I enjoyed Robin Hood’s sense of justice and adventure, especially when he was a master of disguise or when he performed daring rescues. This builds up the story, making it more exciting and also action-packed to read. That’s what a good story needs to have!   *Come back to this paragraph.
My favourite character is Will o’ Green. His first appearance is in Chapter 1: Robin Meets Will o’ Green, where one of his men said they needed to pay the toll before their journey continued. Friar Tuck recognised one of the outlaws: Will ‘o Green. He said: “You win the first round, Will o’ Green”. “Now wait a moment while I set you a better test, and-” His speech was interrupted by the Foresters of Nottinghamshire. They offer Will a reward.  The Captain of the Foresters would escort the party the rest of the way to Gamewel Hall since he must report this attempted robbery to Squire Gamwel before returning to Nottingham Town to report to the Sheriff. Later, Will saves Robin from Simon Carfax and ties him up. Robin receives the Freedom of the Forest after stabbing Will with a sword and showing Robin a hand sign. These events make a character well-known, and, obviously, the favourite.
The story felt captivated as it reminded me of when I got an archery set for Christmas last year. It also made me emotional as his father and mother died, leaving Robin an orphan. As the book goes on, emotions change from curious to happy to fascinated and last but not least, a happy ending.*
If I were to have a role in the Merry Men, I would choose to be an Information Gatherer, as I do not like fighting, which may result in injuries and death. I would keep a close eye on the Sheriff’s tax collector and spot people disguised as nobles who are helping the Sheriff. This role would be useful as the chances of victory increase, and make the plot exciting (if I were in the story).
Robin Hood is a must-read novel that lets young readers go on an adventure with the well-known outlaw. It has an exceptional plot with several twists and turns. If you like adventure, archery and outlaws, I would recommend this to you. Get Robin Hood now!

Rating: 5/5
*When I mean happy ending, I mean an emotion that has a happy ending.

The Secret Garden: Book Summary

In Frances Hodgson Burnett’s epic novel, The Secret Garden, we are introduced to the main character named Mary Lennox. Before reading the novel, readers might think that Mary might be an innocent girl who finds a secret garden. However, the story has many twists that lead to an unexpected storyline that allows her to transform throughout the story.
During the first few chapters of the story, the author’s vivid descriptions let us travel back to a hot and humid place in India, where Mary used to live with her parents. When a dangerous burst of cholera (a disease) spread throughout the area, Mary had no choice but to leave her lazy old self and go to live at Misselthwaite Manor, the mansion and residence of the Craven family. After reading this part of the story, I inferred that she would change herself (even literally!).
A bit after, we are introduced to Mary’s “personal servant”, Martha. She was a very enthusiastic young lady who always spoke broad Yorkshire, as the story is set in this part of England. During the conversations between Mary and Martha, Martha introduced Mistress Mary to Dickon, who was a master of the arts when it came to animal charming. He understood every animal and he believed that if you listen carefully to the robin’s and other animals’ calls, you can understand what they are saying.
Another one of the pivotal characters is Colin Craven, Mr Craven’s son. He was quite misunderstood and rude. Once Mary had talked the sense out of him, he suddenly dreamt of making his hunchback disappear and his legs being all okay to stand, as he could not walk properly. Once I was introduced to the characters, I really felt like these three people made a difference in the story.
In the book (and the movie as well!), the secret garden helps the characters to heal their emotions with the calm, peaceful environment of divine greenery. I spotted that Colin himself had grown out of his volatile self because he really dug deep into the underlying reality of how good fresh air can be.
During his first few introductions into the novel, he threw a lot of tantrums, saying that he was going to die. However, when he travelled his first few metres into the garden, the garden itself changed Colin entirely. It really made me think that people can be just as short-tempered in the real world and things like calm gardens and beautiful scenery can really affect your feelings and your mind overall.
Similarly, Mary transformed the same way, as she was disagreeable when she first arrived at Misselthwaite Manor. As she made frequent visits to the garden, she started to like people more and she liked everything from then on.

Personal Opinion:
Some things I liked about Mary’s transformation was that she didn’t grow sporadically, she actually immersed herself into her own growth. Mistress Mary understood what she needed to work on and what she is already good at. For instance, she was very calm when she found out about the secret garden. However, she changed this mindset when she really needed to, such as screaming at her own cousin because of the hogwash he was talking about related to humps and himself becoming a hunchback. Due to this sudden fit of rage, I believe that Mary did not stay as one single human being; she learned how to control her emotions across many different situations.
In The Secret Garden, my favourite character would definitely be Dickon, because of the qualities that he had throughout the story. His fluent, broad Yorkshire taught me a lot about the environment of this part of North England. Additionally, his animal charming skills showed me that he is an important character in this novel. He is basically a symbol of calmness, support, generosity and calmness, as he supported Mary when times were hard and he helped Colin to stand up.
Each chapter made me feel different throughout the story as it had specific language that changed the entire mood of the story. For example, chapters such as Chapter 23: Magic made me feel like Colin was becoming someone who actually thinks about things. Other chapters like Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 made my envisioning gloomy and dark, as if something sad had happened to the world. Overall, after reading this book, I thought that the mood changed throughout the story, making it spicy for hungry bookworms to read.
If I had my own secret garden, I would treat it as if I was taking care of gold. The reason I would have my own secret garden is because I can do things alone in a calm, divine environment. The way I would treat this garden is by taking water to it every day and providing enough care for the animals as well so they can cooperate. It would basically be like taking care of the plants in your backyard but definitely more carefully.
In the aftermath, The Secret Garden by Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett isn’t just a novel, it is a truly fictitious marvel that would still be qualified for an Oscar award if it was a movie! The thing about this book is that when you look at the front cover, you would think that the book is going to be very boring. However, if you look at the contents of this book, you won’t just see words on a piece of parchment; you will see a painted picture of support, twists and gratitude.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett: Book Review

Summary
The story starts with a girl named Mary Lennox. At the start of the story, Mary is a very spoilt, sour and lonely girl living in India. After her parents tragically die from an illness, she is orphaned and sent away to live with her uncle, Mr. Craven in Misselthwaite Manor in the gloomy Yorkshire moors. The house is giant and full of secrets, with over a hundred rooms, most of them locked away. Mary is very unhappy because she has no one to play with and doesn’t like the cold English weather.
Everything changes when Mary hears rumours of a garden locked away for ten years. With the help of a robin, she discovers a buried key and a door hidden under strands of tangled ivy. When she climbs inside, she finds a locked, abandoned garden that looks dead and grey. Mary decides to keep it a secret and works hard to pull up weeds and plant seeds. She is determined to bring the sleeping garden back to life, and as she works in the fresh air, she starts to feel stronger and kinder herself.
Mary doesn’t stay lonely for long. She meets Martha, a cheerful housemaid who tells her stories of the moor, and Martha’s brother Dickon, who is amazing because he can talk to animals and knows everything about plants.
The biggest surprise is when Mary discovers her cousin, Colin, hidden away in a secret bedroom. Colin is very sick and bossy because he thinks he will never be able to walk. However, as Mary and Dickon take him into the secret garden, something magical happens. As the flowers grow and bloom, so do the children. Colin starts to believe that he can get better, and the three of them become the best of friends.
By the end of the book, the garden is full of colour and life again. More importantly, it helps the children heal and become much happier. Mary is no longer a sour girl, and Colin becomes strong enough to run and jump. It shows that nature and friendship can be like real magic. I really enjoyed this book because it shows that even the saddest places can become beautiful if you give them a little bit of love.

Personal Opinion
What makes Mary’s journey in The Secret Garden so impactful is that her personal transformation acts as a catalyst for a wider community healing. Initially a spoiled, selfish and lonely child, Mary finds her sour disposition softened by the magic and vitality of the secret garden. This shift in her own spirit creates a powerful chain effect, most notably in her relationship with her cousin Colin, a boy who lived in total isolation and believed he was a dying invalid. By challenging his negative beliefs and encouraging him to experience the restorative power of nature firsthand, Mary effectively mirrors her own rebirth in him. As they nurture the dormant garden back to life, they move from a state of stunted isolation to one of health, empathy and joy, provin gthat a single person’s growth can trigger a profound metamorphosis in everyone they interact with.
In addition to the main protagonists, the character of Dickon Sowerby stood out as my personal favourite because of his almost magical connection to nature and animals. As a common moor boy with a kind, steady spirit, he serves as the essential guide who helps both Mary and Colin find their way out of their initial bitterness and isolation. His unique ability to charm wild creatures and his deep, intuitive understanding of the earth provide a sense of wonder that contrasts beautifully with the gloomy atmosphere of Misselthwaite Manor. By the end of the story, his selfless friendship and tireless work in the garden make him a symbol of the healing power of the natural world.
This story’s emotional impact is truly touching, especially as you witness the transformations of Mary and Colin in the later scenes. Their growth serves as a powerful reminder that change is possible, inspiring a sense of reflection on how I can improve my own personality and outlook. By connecting deeply with the characters’ journey, a hopeful perspective on personal development and the influence of my environment.
If I was offered the opportunity to have my own secret garden, then it would be likely that I would take it! It would help me spend more time outside, and it’s a safe place for me to come to anytime. The only reason why I am not certain to accept this is because I have many other hobbies and responsibilities other than gardening that I have to tend to.
Conclusion
The Secret garden remains a timeless masterpiece because it beautifully illustrates the parallel between cultivating a landscape and the blossoming of the human spirit. Through the transformation of Mary, Colin and the garden itself, Frances Hodgson Burnett delivers a powerful message about the healing properties of nature, companionship and a positive mindset. The novel’s enduring charm lies in its atmospheric prose and its ability to remind readers of all ages that beauty can be found in the most neglected places if one is willing to provide the necessary care. Ultimately, it is a heartwarming celebration of growth and renewal that leaves a lasting impression long after the final page is turned.

Term 1 Book Review – 2026
Book Summary
“The Jungle Book” by Rudyard Kipling, is a fictious adventure story based on a man-cub named Mowgli. Mowgli was a boy raised by wolves and lived his life in the vast depths of the jungle. He was separated from his family by Shere Khan, a ferocious tiger who was a real nighmare to most of the living creatures. Mowgli had wandered off one night as a naked baby into the jungle and was found among a pack of Wolves in their cave. The wolves adopted and protected him from the mad tiger who wanted to kill Mowgli. Later in the story he tries to live in harmony with the humans and wolves, but unfortunately they both had their own problems for this idea. Eventually, Mowgli finds a safe habitat in the jungle, settles down and lives in peace with his own pack.
When Mowgli was growing up to be a boy, his friends Baloo, an old, brown bear and Bagheera, the Black Panther guided him through the jungle by explaining the jungle rules and telling him not to become friends with the horrible Monkey People. Baloo also taught Mowgli many things, such as the Wood and Water Laws: how to tell a rotten branch from a sound one, how to speak respectfully to the wild bees, what to say to Mang the Bat when Mowgli interupted him in the branches at noon, and how to alert the water-snakes in the pools before he jumped and splashed down among them.
Some of the significant characters in the story are Shere Khan and Kaa the Rock-Python. Shere Khan, was the furious, nasty tiger. The thing that makes Shere Khan very significant is that he had plans to kill Mowgli once and for all and always hunted him. The reason was that Mowgli was seperated from his family and was taken away by Shere Khan to be killed, but Mowgli escaped him into a Wolf’s cave during night time. And because Mowgli escaped him, Shere Khan wanted to kill Mowgli someday. But the wolves protected him from this ferocious tiger. The other significant character in this story is Kaa because he really helped Bhageera and Baloo when they fought the Bander Log in the Cold Liars – an Indian village where the Monkey People took Mowgli away from the jungle. The way Kaa did this was by battling the Monkey People, frightening them and teaching all of them a very good lesson. The outstanding feature of Kaa in chapter two was that he was overall very cooperative and helpful.
In chapter three, Mowgli and Grey Brother both devised the perfect plan to defeat Shere Khan with the help of Akela and a herd of buffaloes. Mowgli, Akela and Grey Brother all set a trap for Shere Kan and then ordered the buffaloes to trample down on the tiger, destroying him instantly. Mowgli’s plan was a success! Despite killing Shere Khan and winning a tough fight, all the villagers thought Mowgli was an evil sorcerer and rudely cast him out of their tribe, throwing stones and calling him names, such as “wizard”.  Since Mowgli was again cast out of the Indian Village and by the Wolf Pack, Mother and Father Wolves’ cubs said that they would hunt along with him in the jungle.

Personal Opinion
The things that I liked about Mowgli’s bravery and growth is that he was determined to defeat Shere Khan and prevent him from causing more trouble. Mowgli was also a good learner who deligently learned all the Laws that Baloo taught him such as the Wood, Water Laws and many more. Another thing that really stood out to me about Mowgli’s growth and bravery is that he was always able to find a solution to a problem and showed fearless acts in parts of the novel such as throwing a pot of fire on the Council Rock in chapter one as a way of self-defence.
My favourite character in the “Jungle Book” is Bagheera the Black Panther because he is one of Mowgli’s companions and also played an important role in fighting the Bandar Log. Furthermore, Bagheera is a very sensible and reasonable character. For instance, when when Baloo failed to warn Mowgli about the malicious Monkey People and got himself into trouble, Bagheera asked a reasonable question by saying, “What is the use of half slaying Mowgli with blows if thou didst not warn him?”
The story made me feel a mix of emotions such as being very curious about Mowgli’s next adventures when he grows up to become a boy in chapter one. It also made me feel sorry for Mowgli in chapter two when he was swung by the Bandar Log high up in the treetops and taken away to the Cold Lairs, the Indian Village especially because l feel it is very cruel to treat someone that way. Finally, this classic novel also made me feel happy and delighted when Mowgli won the battle with Shere Khan in chapter three.
Personally, I would like to learn the Laws of the Jungle instead of living in the Jungle because the rules of the jungle can not only be useful for your knowledge- it can also have a similar meaning to Human Laws if only one looks at it according to what applies for us as well. For instance, Bagheera told Mowgli one of the the Jungle Laws which said, “Do not kill cattle young or old, but you may kill everything else which you are strong enough to kill- all the jungle is yours”. This could apply to humans by saying, “Do not fight people who have helped you, but only fight when you feel that someone is overpowering or threathening  you”. Another example could be when the Jungle Law said, “The Rules of the Jungle never order anything without a reason and does not allow any beast to eat man except when he is showing his children how to kill and is hunting outside the grounds of his tribe”. We can interpret this law and make it apply for humans by saying, “Do not battle other people without a cause, and only defend yourself when your habitat or something precious to you is being destroyed”.

The Jungle Book – By Rudyard Kipling

Book summary
The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling tells the story of a boy named Mowgli who lived along side the Seeonee Wolf Pack in the Jungles of India. He was rescued by Father Wolf as a baby from Shere Khan, the ferocious tiger, who wanted to kill the ‘Man Cub’.
Mowgli became part of the Wolf pack and had to learn the ‘Laws of the Jungle’. To help him Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther became his teachers. They helped guide him through jungle life by teaching him skills like ‘the master words’ which are calls and phrases you use around the jungle to seek help from other animals.
Mowgli’s life in the Jungle is full of adventure, but also danger. Shere Khan, for the last 12 years, is determined to kill Mowgli and causes many issues for him. Mowgli starts wondering about his identity. Does he belong with the animals or humans? We also get introduced to Kaa, a cunning python. Mowgli must use his courage and intelligence to face challenges and protect himself. As the story continues, Mowgli defeats Shere Khan and through the process discovers where he belongs.

Personal Opinion
I deeply admired Mowgli’s bravery and growth, espicially when he confronted Shere Khan. Shere Khan was a powerful tiger, and Mowgli was just a boy, but he still went foward and came up with a plan and defeated Shere Khan. He did not hesitate. It showed how much more mature he became at the end of the book.
My favourite character was Bagheera because he was a warm and intelligent character. He always referred to Mowgli as “Little Brother” which showed us readers how much he cares about Mowgli. I also was very captivated by his story before Mowgli, where he was captured and imprisoned by humans.
This story had me on the edge of my seat. It had so many tense and dangerous moments. It also made me think about the importance of good friends who you can trust and rely on. Mowgli couldnt have overcome the many trials in this book without the support of his many great friends.
I would not want to live in the jungle because I am very use to the comfortable urban life here. But my dream is to be able to go for an extended holiday or trip to the Ecuadorian Rainforest where I want to be able to rent out a hut or lodge up in the tree tops. I would love the opportunity to learn the jungle rules and understand how animals live together. I have a deep love for animals and nature. If I am able to learn their way, I would be able to help aid them and through that the rest of our beautiful world.

Bowser the Hound book review

Bowser the Hound was a charming old dog who was owned by Farmer Brown and Farmer Brown’s boy. He was a loyal hound and loved tracking scents. Bowser the Hound loved chasing Old Man Coyote, Reddy fox and Granny fox. Bowser was extremely wise and couldn’t be possibly tricked. He was a good dog and he was very energetic when someone persuades him too do a long run.
One day, Old Man Coyote wandered by and Bowser noticed him and as you know, he started chasing him. But Old man coyote was full of tricks! He dashed away at full speed so that he could think of a clever plan. As you see Bowser’s only aim was to get this old sinser. Bowser ran and ran not knowing where he was. He became frightened and scared.
In this area there was a freezing river. Old man coyote leaped to the other side of the river. He made no scent at all so Bowser could fall in the trap. Bowser hadn’t noticed that Old man Coyote lead him very far than he had expected. Before, Bowser had known his back but now he was so keen of catching Old Man Coyote he had lost track of where he was! All these thoughts filled his mind and he didn’t see the big trap in his way. Suddenly he had felt coldness swarm him. He struggled free as Old Man Coyote cackled evilly.

Bowser was lead to a different farm where the farmer took care of him but Bowser thought it was a prisoner of kindness. Through out his journey, Blacky the Crow helped Bowser get home as he told Reddy fox there was a farm that does not lock the doors which is where Bowser was taken care of. Bowser saw Reddy Fox and chased him all the way home.
Soon Bowser outcame his enemies and reunited with his family. With true friends,he made his way back home with kindness and compassion. The old Coyote was angry when he heard Bowser had found his way back home because he thought Bowser was dead! He was furious when he heard Bowser was home safely.
I like Bowser’s loyalty, courage, kindness and respect towards others because it shows he is a great example of a role model when he is hard working and caring. Bowser shows great skills and helpfulness when he enters an unexpected situation. This makes Bowser a great leader as he tries his best to avoid danger and stick to his achievements.
My favourite character in this wonderful book is Bowser because he shows and expresses his feelings which makes the book interesting and entertaining. When someone expresses their emotions, it makes it easier to understand each other. Bowser shows determination, brave, kindness and skill.
This story made me feel energised because I loved the way he makes a wonderful adventure. This story can also makes me feel delighted because Bowser is helpful and kind. He also symbolises courage and cooperation and calmness.
I think this story teaches children to be like brave Bowser. It makes them to have fun but learn daily life skills such as doing chores and being bravery. Bowser is a great example of hard work when he thinks about how to save his life and friends. Bowser shows bravery in difficult circumstances which is a great example to be a role model.
I would love to join Bowser on an adventure because I can explore different things, talking with animals and funny characters. Bowser and me will go different places together and have great fun and conversations together. Imagine you too go on an splendid adventure with Bowser….

The story of Peter Pan – Book summary

Peter Pan is a magical boy who could fly using fairy dust and he never grows up! H e lived in a place called Neverland which was located deep in a forest next to a lake. He was visiting a house where three children named Wendy, John and Michael lived. One night when he visited their bedroom his shadow was trapped there. Later he came with a fairy called Tinker Bell looking for it and found it in the top drawer of a dresser. He tried to stick it back to himself using soap but it did not work. Then he started crying and the girl, Wendy woke up and helped him sewing his shadow back to his body. Peter told Wendy that he knew fairies and that he could fly. Wendy woke up his two brothers John and Michael and introduced Peter Pan to them. They were all excited and agreed to fly with Peter Pan to the place where he lived, Neverland.
In Neverland there were six lost boys named, Slightly Soiled, Tootles, Nibs, Curly and two twins named ‘The Twins”, who wore fur coats and looked after by Peter Pan. Some evil pirates always tried to catch and harm the lost boys by defeating Peter Pan. There were twelve pirates including a scary-looking captan called Captain James. But everyone called him Captain Hook. After flying to the Neverland with Peter Pan, Wendy and her brothers lived with the lost boys. Wendy looked after the boys by mending their clothes, putting them to bed and telling them bedside stories, just like a mother.
A group of other people called Indians with a Princess called Tiger Lily also lived in the nearby forest. Tiger Lily liked Peter Pan and she treated the pirates as her own enemies and helped him to look after the lost boys. There were several attempts by the pirates to harm the lost boys such as giving them a poisoned cake. In the final battle they caught the lost boys and brought them to their ship. However, Peter Pan played a trick on them and managed to save the lost boys and Wendy from the Pirates.
Finally Peter Pan thought it was safer the lost boys and Wendy to go back to their homes. So they all flew back to Wendy’s home and met her mother. Wendy’s mother was happy to see her children back in the home and she also adopted all the lost boys and the Peter Pan. They all happily lived thereafter.
Personal opinion
I liked the part of the story where Peter Pan finally saved the lost boys from the pirates by acting as if he was Wendy. He really cared about the lost boys and also Wendy and risked his life to fight with them alone. He always thought about their safety.
My favourite character in the book is also Peter Pan for the same reasons. He is a hero and true friend who always helped his friends whenever they needed him. The reason why he invited Wendy to Neverland was also to look after them better. He did not know any stories and he wanted Wendy to tell them bedside stories and mend their clothes. Peter Pan always found ways to save the lost boys from any danger which is what a true friend would always do.
When I read the story I felt that Peter Pan is a very brave person. I wish I could be as brave as him and save my friends and the people I love from any danger they face. It is a positive book which made me believe in myself.
If I were to choose whether to visit the Neverland or to be able to fly, I would choose to fly like Peter Pan. Flying is exciting and I can enjoy a good view from high up above. Flying is a new skill which I never experienced before.
On the other hand, I want my everday to be peaceful and not scary. I do not feel safe to be in Neverland. I do not know how to fight against pirates and I do not want to get poisoned by a cake.
