If you’re a parent in NSW exploring Opportunity Class (OC) or Selective School exams, this WEMT OCTTC STTC guide will help you understand which course to choose and when to start. But which one should your child take — and when?

Here’s a clear and practical breakdown to help you understand how these courses work together and when it makes sense to begin each one.

WEMT OCTTC STTC Guide: What Are These Courses?

This WEMT OCTTC STTC guide explains how each course supports OC and Selective preparation.

WEMT (Writing, English, Mathematics, Thinking Skills)
● A year-round foundational program focused on building the core academic and reasoning skills that underpin all advanced testing.
● Suitable for students from Year 1 to Year 6, with content tailored to each year level.
● WEMT is not just a prep tool — it’s a long-term skill development program.
OCTTC (OC Trial Test Course)
● Designed to simulate the actual OC exam, which takes place in Year 4, Term 2 (May).
Includes weekly test practice in Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, and Thinking Skills.
● Best for students in Year 3 Term 3 through to Year 4 Term 2.

STTC (Selective Trial Test Course)
● A high-level test preparation course for the Selective High School Placement Test held in Year 6, Term 2 (May).
● Covers all four exam sections, including Writing (which is not part of the OC exam).
● Recommended from Year 5 Term 1 all the way to Year 6 Term 2.

Recommended Learning Path by Year Level

Here’s a flexible but strategic timeline for families who want to support both OC and Selective preparation — without overloading their child:

Year 2: The Foundation Stage
Start WEMT to develop reading habits, numerical fluency, and early writing skills.
● Focus on establishing learning routines in a low-pressure environment.
 Year 3: Getting OC-Ready
● Continue WEMT to solidify comprehension, reasoning, and maths fundamentals.
● Begin OCTTC in Term 3 to gradually introduce OC test-style questions and timing.
 Year 4: OC Test Year
Continue WEMT to maintain strong literacy, numeracy, and logical thinking.
Complete OCTTC through Term 2, leading up to the official OC test in May.
● After OC: Don’t Stop Here.

Many families make the mistake of slowing down after the OC test — but this is where the real journey begins. WEMT is not just a test-prep course. It’s the long-term backbone of your child’s academic thinking. OC may be over, but Selective is where the real challenge begins. Ongoing WEMT training isn’t just about improving marks — it’s the most reliable way to build your child’s ability to think critically, write clearly, and solve problems independently.
By continuing WEMT after OC, you’re setting your child up for deeper, more meaningful learning — and real success later on.
Year 5: Selective Prep Begins
Begin STTC in Term 1 to build familiarity with Selective test structure.
● Continue WEMT to deepen skills in advanced writing, reading analysis, and thinking strategies.
Year 6: Final Prep for Selective
● Maintain STTC throughout Term 1 and Term 2.
● Emphasise timed writing practice, full-length mock exams, and targeted revision via platforms like Cyberschool.

What About Writing?

As highlighted in this WEMT OCTTC STTC guide, writing plays a key role in Selective preparation.
OC test does not include Writing, but writing practice is still highly recommended from Year 3 onward.

Why? Writing develops logical expression, vocabulary precision, and structured thinking — all of which benefit reading and thinking skills.

For Selective exams, Writing is a core scoring area. Students who’ve been writing regularly from a young age tend to perform much more confidently and coherently under time pressure.

This is simply my recommended pathway.
Every child is different — their learning style, motivation, and academic level all matter.
A parent’s thoughtful and flexible plan based on their child’s strengths and needs is always more important than any fixed roadmap.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this WEMT OCTTC STTC guide shows how to plan effectively for OC and Selective exams.

There’s no “one-size-fits-all” path — but starting early, and choosing the right course at the right time, makes a huge difference.
Think of it not as cramming for a test, but as building long-term academic confidence.

WEMT builds the skills.
OCTTC and STTC apply them.
Consistent effort over years beats last-minute panic every time.
